Music ministry application

Background

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:16-17

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.” John 4:23

Welcome to CCC’s music ministry application process. We are glad that you are interested in serving God with your time and talents through music ministry at CCC. This application process is designed to help you better understand what we believe God’s design for corporate worship is, how each of us in the body of Christ can partner with one another to help fulfill that design, and ultimately help us worship our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in spirit and truth. As a local congregation, CCC affirms the authority and sufficiency of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives and sees corporate worship (including music, prayer, reading of the Word, preaching of the Word, and celebration of the ordinances) as an essential portion of the Christian life. We hope that your interest in our music ministry stems from a desire to serve out of a heart of love for Christ rather than selfish ambition (Phil. 2).

The following information will give you our vision for music ministry at CCC, some practical guidelines and expectations for members of the music team, and the steps that are involved in the application process.

Mission

Carlsbad Community Church exists to know Christ and to make Him known. The Great Commission is our mandate and the heart of our mission. Our greatest good and our ultimate goal is the glory of God (Matthew 28:19-20; John 17:26; Phil 3:8-11; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; Ephesians 1:3-14).

Definition of worship

We believe that the Biblical doctrine of worship is much broader than the typical definition today - namely that “worship = music.” We are called to be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1-3), meaning that our spiritual worship is a 24/7, 365 endeavor. Thus, music ministry is only one way that we worship the one true God, and is a evidence of a heart that loves God. As Warren Wiersbe says, “Worship is the believer’s response of all that they are – mind, emotions, will, body – to what God is and says and does” (Warren Wiersbe, Real Worship, p. 26).

Values

God exalting - Worship is first and foremost God focused, and must emphasizes the nature and being of our God as revealed in His Word. We want everything we do in our worship service to exalt God, humble man, and lead us to greater affection for Him.

Christ proclaiming (Gospel centered) - It is our desire that our worship be centered around the Gospel message, the good news of Jesus Christ our Redeemer and Savior. When we understand His all-sufficient work in his life, death, and resurrection we should be lead to worship.

Holy Spirit directed - It is our desire that our worship be led and directed by the Holy Spirit. To this end we pray, prepare, and practice so that our corporate times of worship are led by the Spirit and encourage greater exercise of faith and love with one another.

Bible saturated - It is our desire that all of our corporate worship would be biblically informed and that the truth of Scripture would be woven throughout the fabric of our gatherings. We believe that no songs or corporate worship elements should be included that do not exalt our God.

Prayer filled - It is our desire that all manner of worship that happens be bathed in prayer, be filled with prayer, and be consistent in prayer.

Membership at CCC: all regular music team participants who would lead musical worship should be members of CCC. Please let us know if you are interested in the membership process.

Regular attendance: all members of the music ministry should be actively attending CCC worship services and regular functions. It is impossible to lead a congregation you do not know well, and regular attendance displays a desire to serve and be committed to the congregation of CCC.

Commitment to rehearsals: weekly rehearsals exist for both choir (Thursday evening) and praise team (Sunday morning) members. We also will require that you attend our soundcheck each Sunday you are scheduled to participate.

Undistracting excellence: we ask that you commit to practicing regularly and continually seeking to improve as a musician/vocalist. We do not seek excellence for our own notoriety but rather so we can minimize distraction during our worship service and help provide an environment that focuses on God and His amazing nature and attributes.

Dress code: appropriate dress and modest attire should be worn when participating. We want to ensure that our appearance does not distract the congregation or shine the spotlight on ourselves as we seek to worship God in spirit and truth.
